Smoking CBD: Benefits, Tips, and What You Can Expect

First things first …

What is CBD?

CBD is short for cannabidiol. And it is just one of over 100 chemical compounds known as cannabinoids found in cannabis. It is the second most prevalent active ingredient in cannabis, and the most prevalent cannabinoid found in the hemp plant.

Unlike THC, CBD does not ‘get you high’ and is non-intoxicating. This makes CBD an ideal choice for those who are looking for relief from pain and other symptoms without the mind-altering effects of THC or pharmaceutical drugs.

Smokable CBD, in particular, has also proven to be an effective tool in smoking cessation, and offers an enjoyable alternative for former marijuana users who may wish to quit (or cut down on) smoking THC

Smokable CBD? Wait … you can smoke CBD?

Yes, you can smoke CBD.

Smoking CBD is considered safe (and non-addictive), in moderation, for most adults in good health. Smoking CBD may be effective in relieving symptoms of a variety of ailments, and has quickly become one of the most popular methods of CBD consumption.

When CBD is smoked, beneficial cannabinoids are absorbed into the bloodstream almost immediately, offering more than twice the bioavailability (about 31%) of the more traditional oral ingestion of CBD oils.

And greater bioavailability is a good thing!

Because the quicker CBD reaches your Endocannabinoid System, the faster its calming and beneficial effects kick in.

Experts are still trying to fully understand the ECS. But so far, we know it plays role in regulating a range of functions and processes, including sleep, mood, appetite, memory, reproduction, and fertility.Healthline

And since smoking CBD makes it more bioavailable, it is often regarded as the most affordable and the most effective way to enjoy the many benefits of CBD.

In addition to offering greater effects, the social aspect of smoking CBD offers a level of enjoyment that can’t be found in other methods of consumption.

This has prompted a culture and community of enjoyment akin to fine wine or craft beer while offering longtime cannabis enthusiasts an enjoyable smoke without the high.

Some of the most popular methods of smoking CBD include:

We’ll take a look at each in a little more detail later on …

But first let’s take a closer look at why anyone might want to smoke CBD in the first place, and the experience you can expect.

Who cares!

What does smoking CBD feel like?

For most people smoking CBD provides a sense of relaxation and overall wellbeing. It can also provide quick relief from tension or anxiety. While also helping users find a sense of restfulness that helps them fall asleep at night.

Users report that smoking CBD is one of the most effective way to naturally relieve pain. And smoking CBD for pain relief has quickly become one of hemp flower products’ most popular uses.

Users often state that it almost feels like getting high, but while maintaining mental clarity.

This is because CBD is non-psychoactive.

Smoking CBD often produces a feeling akin to a body high — a sense of physical and emotional relief.

Allowing users to go about business as usual while still finding time to chill when things get a little hectic, or as an end of the day ritual for relaxation.

Can smoking CBD help you quit smoking?

Studies indicate that CBD’s anti-anxiety properties may be able to help you quit smoking, and stay smoke free, when combined with other healthy lifestyle choices.

So it’s no wonder that recent research has shown that tobacco consumers are more than twice as likely to convert to smokable hemp in the near future.

CBD Cigarettes, in particular, may offer a uniquely beneficial option for those who wish to quit smoking …

By providing an all-natural tobacco alternative that is 100% tobacco and nicotine free.

CBD may neutralize smoking cues

According to a 2018 study published in the journal Addiction, CBD can reverse the attentional bias to cigarette cues. In other words, you won’t feel triggered to smoke as often.

Researchers at University College London told 30 tobacco smokers not to smoke for 12 hours before treating them with either 800 mg of oral CBD or a placebo.

The participants were then shown a series of photos alternating between smoking-related images and neutral images.

Although CBD did not affect general withdrawals or cravings, it did make the smoking-related images less appealing.

At the same time, patients in the CBD group had lower systolic blood pressure than the placebo group.

According to the study’s authors, “These results suggest that…CBD may exert anti‐addictive effects by normalizing the salience of drug cues.”

CBD may reduce nicotine cravings

Hindocha’s study builds on a pilot study that was published five years earlier in the journal Addictive Behaviors.

24 smokers were given a CBD inhaler or a placebo inhaler and were told to smoke it whenever they had nicotine cravings.

Over the course of seven days participants in the CBD group smoked 40 percent fewer cigarettes. The placebo group, however, experienced no change in the number of cigarettes smoked.

CBD may help fight addiction

Several studies indicate that CBD may treat addiction by reducing impulsive behavior, anxiety, stress, and inflammation.

Plus, CBD may have neurobiological effects on the brain circuitry related to drug cravings.

Due to CBD’s broad effects, neuroscientists predict that, “CBD has therapeutic potential relevant for multiple conditions that underlie relapse risk, including craving induced by drug-related environmental contexts, susceptibility to stress, heightened anxiety and, possibly, impaired impulse control.”

How to smoke CBD: methods and advice

How you choose to smoke CBD is ultimately a matter of preference. And each form of smoking has its own merits and enthusiastic following.

For instance, many smokers choose to buy hemp flower only in its unrolled form, while others prefer the convenience of pre-rolls.

Many new CBD smokers choose to try out a few different methods of smoking CBD to see what works best for them. And to help, we’ll cover a few of the most popular methods of consumption below. And be sure to share your favorite method of smoking CBD in the comments at the bottom of this post!

CBD hemp flower (CBD hemp buds)

What is CBD Hemp Flower?

CBD flower (or hemp flower) is cannabis containing .3% or less ∆9 THC.

Unlike marijuana, which does contain intoxicating amounts of THC, CBD hemp flower does not get you high, and is federally legal under the Agricultural Act of 2018.

Hemp flower is rich in CBD and beneficial terpenes, and of all the ways to smoke CBD, hemp flower tends to be the most popular (especially among traditional marijuana smokers).

The Benefits of CBD Hemp Flower

CBD hemp flower offers a few advantages over other forms of smokable CBD consumption. First, it is considered the purest form of consumption because it is unaltered (besides being dried, cured, and trimmed) and it is easy to inspect both the visual condition and the aroma of the hemp you are consuming.

Smoking CBD hemp buds also provides the most flexibility in terms of how you choose to consume your CBD. CBD flower can be ground up and smoked in a pipe or bong. The flower can also be rolled into a joint or a blunt with either papers or wraps. You can even use CBD flower to make your own edibles (more on this coming soon)!

How to store CBD Hemp Flower

One question we get pretty often is, “How should I store my CBD hemp flower.”

And it’s a very good question to ask! Because how you choose to store your CBD flower can have a huge impact on the quality of the experience.

Improperly stored CBD flower can often have less nose and a less enjoyable taste. Worst of all, improperly stored flower can experience terpene degradation which means a less effective and less soothing experience.

To properly store CBD hemp flower:

  1. Keep your flower in an airtight jar
  2. But don’t pack the jar too full
  3. Store your flower in a dark, dry space
  4. Avoid direct sunlight and heat
  5. Avoid excessively opening the jar
  6. But be sure to open it at least once a day to allow for the exchange of oxygen

Properly stored, your hemp flower can stay fresh (and even improve in taste and smell) for a much longer period of time. This means you can order in bulk and smoke some now while saving some for later.

Can you buy CBD hemp flower in Texas?

House Bill 1325 signed by the Governor of Texas in June 2019, states that the processing and manufacturing of hemp flower is prohibited for Texas farmers. But, nothing in the Bill says anything about consumption. The key takeaway? CBD hemp flower is legal to consume in Texas. However …

Early in 2020, regulators at the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) issued rules extending that ban on the manufacture of hemp to also forbid the retail sale of any smokable hemp products. And while this regulation has been challenged in court, litigation is still pending.

This means that at least for now, while it is legal to consume smokeable CBD in Texas, it could be difficult for Texas residents to find in retail locations.

So for now, it is easiest (and safest) for Texas residents to purchase their CBD hemp flower online
