Let’s Talk Terpenes: What are they?

Let’s Talk Terpenes: What are they?

If you’re as big a fan of hemp as we are, you probably know all about terpenes. However, if you’re a newbie, we’ll break it down for you – what they are and why they’re effective and essential to high-quality hemp.

What are Cannabis Derived Terpenes?

Terpenes are a diverse class of organic compounds that are found in many plants, including cannabis. They are highly aromatic and give organisms their scent. Think of lavender and rosemary – terpenes are responsible for their unique smell.

The cannabinoids, like Cannabinoid tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in marijuana or Cannabidiol (CBD) in CBD products like Redwood Reserves, typically get all the attention when it comes to the cannabis plant. However, terpenes play a big role as well. Aside from the unique scent and taste they produce, it’s believed they can also impact the effectiveness of hemp consumption. Let’s explore this a little more.

Entourage effect, you say?

It is theorized that various cannabis compounds work together to create unique effects and benefits, and this phenomenon has been coined “the entourage effect.” Since cannabis plants contain a high amount of terpenes, there have been numerous studies around how terpenes interact with cannabis.

Dr. Ethan Russo—a neurologist and pharmacologist who has long studied cannabis compounds and how they affect the body – published a review called “Taming THC: potential cannabis synergy and phytocannabinoid-terpenoid entourage effects.” In this review, he studied the benefits of common cannabis compounds and describes their potential synergistic effects based on their pharmacology. In this study, he identifies some potential synergies, including CBD and the peppery terpene caryophyllene in the treatment of addiction, and CBD with the citrus-scented terpene limonene might work together to alleviate anxiety.

This study and others show promise around the benefits of terpenes when mixed with CBD. Now, we’re not here to make promises around benefits, as more study still needs to be done before any guarantees are made, but here’s what we can promise – quality and flavor.

What’s in and what’s not.

Now that you’ve digested terpenes 101 and the possible effects they can have on your CBD consumption, you can understand why we are supporters. We come to CBD from one direction – the experience.
